Ethiopia’s government has launched a new offensive against rebel forces from the blockaded Tigray region, where malnutrition and starvation deaths are rising while UN officials coordinating the humanitarian response have been deported from the country.

Ethiopian army launches ground offensive on Tigray forces, rebel group says

Rebels from Ethiopia's war-hit Tigray said Monday the military had launched ground offensives "on all fronts" including in the northern region of Amhara.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's office did not explicitly confirm the news, which follows widespread speculation that a major military push is imminent, but said the government had an obligation to protect citizens from the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

Google to invest $1bn to back Equiano cable to increase Africa’s Internet access

Google plans to invest $1bn over five years to support digital transformation in Africa, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said today.

The investment “will support the continent’s digital transformation,” Pichai said in a pre-recorded video released by the company. Google will also invest $50m in black-led start-ups, support non-profit organisations, and wants to partner with African governments, policymakers and businesses, he said.
