Scale of mosque detention centre rescue revealed

by Chris Ewokor

Nigerian police in south-western Oyo state have rescued 259 people from an illegal detention centre in a mosque in Ibadan.

Most of those freed by the police raid were chained up within a mosque compound, police spokesman Gbenga Fadeyi said.

We reported earlier that the owner of the centre and eight others have been arrested.

In the last month, more than 1,000 people have been rescued from religious centres where people are often kept in terrible conditions.

Parents have been sending troublesome children and young men believed to have been addicted to drugs or those thought to have committed petty crimes to the Koranic rehabilitation centres.

But officials have likened them to torture centres where people are chained, staffed and abused.
