Africa faces a coronavirus catastrophe

As of 20 March, “only” a thousand cases of coronavirus had been confirmed in over 40 African countries. Obviously, this figure seems rather low. Still, regardless of whether there is simply a delay in the spread of the virus or shortcomings in how cases are reported, we cannot assume that Africa will long remain immune.

Alarmingly, most African countries seem ill-equipped to face the pandemic. On Wednesday, the WHO has warned that Africa must now “prepare for the worst”.

Nigeria's emir of Kano dethroned for 'disrespect'

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, one of Nigeria's most influential Muslim leaders, has been removed from office.

He was deposed after acting in "total disrespect to lawful instructions from the office of the state governor," the Kano state government said.

Mr Sanusi, a former governor of Nigeria's central bank, has had frosty relations with the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, since 2017.

He has not commented on his removal.
