Das 1964 als Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) gGmbh gegründete Institut hat sich zum 23. Juni 2022 in German Institute of Development and Sustainability, kurz IDOS, umbenannt. Mit diesem Schritt verleiht eines der weltweit führendsten Forschungsinstitute auf dem Gebiet der Entwicklungspolitik und Entwicklungsforschung seiner gewachsenen Internationalisierung und der stärkeren Ausrichtung auf „nachhaltige Entwicklungsprozesse“ mit einem neuen Namen Ausdruck.

Swiss commodities giant Glencore pleads guilty to bribery charges in Africa

The UK subsidiary of Swiss mining and trading Glencore pled guilty to multiple bribery counts for its dealings in four African countries on 21 June. This guilty plea is the second for the company in just two months.

In a Southwark Crown Court hearing in London, Glencore pled guilty to seven counts of bribery regarding oil operations in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and South Sudan.

Textilkonzerne missbrauchen Afrika als Müllkippe

Ostafrika wird mit Textilabfall überschwemmt. Das schadet nicht nur Mensch und Umwelt, sondern hat auch sozioökonomische Folgen.

Jeden Tag werden riesige Berge von Textilmüll an Grenzen von Siedlungen oder direkt an Flussufern abgeladen. Sie landen in den Flüssen und verstopfen Abflüsse, weshalb es häufig zu Überschwemmungen kommt. Unter freiem Himmel verrotten Alt-Textilien auf wilden Mülldeponien. Oft werden die Sachen einfach verbrannt.

Christen-Verfolgung in Nigeria

Die jüngste Ermordung von 40 Gläubigen in einer katholischen Kirche im Südwesten Nigerias hat die Besorgnis über die religiöse Gewalt gegen Christen in dem Land neu entfacht. Die Anteilnahme verebbt aber rasch und es wird wieder verschämt geschwiegen, wenn es um die Not der Christen in Nigeria geht.

African brain drain: '90% of my friends want to leave'

A new survey of more than 4,500 young people in Africa, aged 18-24, has found that 52% of them are likely to consider emigrating in the next few years, citing economic hardship and education opportunities as the top reasons. The BBC spoke to five young people in Nigeria and South Africa who said they do not feel safe in their countries and lack access to work opportunities, but for those in Ghana the picture looks very different.

UK asylum plan defended by Rwandan Anglican archbishop

Rwanda's Anglican Archbishop says he disagrees with senior Church of England leaders over the UK's asylum plan.

Earlier this week, they had said the policy to remove asylum seekers to Rwanda "shames Britain".

But Archbishop Laurent Mbanda said it was not immoral and Rwanda was ready to welcome people needing a home.

Abiy revealed the formation of the body during an address to parliament on Tuesday 14 June in his fullest remarks yet on the peace process, after 19 months of fighting with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
