More than 20 million Nigerians on Monday went into lockdown in sub-Saharan Africa's biggest city Lagos and the capital Abuja, as the continent struggles to curb the spread of coronavirus.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a two-week “cessation of all movements” in key cities to ward off an explosion of cases in Africa's most populous country.

Lange ist es um das Coronavirus in Afrika ruhig geblieben. Die Hoffnung war groß, dass das Virus den Kontinent nicht erreicht oder sich SARS-CoV-2 im wärmeren Klima schwerer tut. Doch die Illusion ist zerbrochen. Inzwischen gibt es der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) zufolge mehr als 1.000 Fälle in mindestens 40 Ländern.

Kenyan government agree to pay cuts, curfew imposed as coronavirus cases grow

Kenya's executive has agreed to pay cuts as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to rise, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced on Wednesday.

Kenyatta and his deputy will take an 80% pay cut, while their ministers and their assistants will take pay cuts ranging from 20% to 30%.

The President also announced a raft of measures to save jobs and by extension the country’s economy.
